The Northeast Middle School Rain Garden represents an innovative Green Campus project that transformed an underused parking lot into a large biofiltration basin. Filled with native plant materials, this site provides middle school students with a hands-on opportunity to learn about the treatment of stormwater runoff and the protection of water quality. Through active maintenance of the garden, students gain a direct understanding of how pollution-filtering systems function to support the local ecosystem.

This project was coordinated in conjunction with the Audubon Neighborhood Association and Northeast Middle School, utilizing a Stewardship Fund Planning Grant obtained from the Mississippi Water Management Organization. Beyond its educational value, the rain garden serves as a significant community improvement by beautifying an area that was considered an eyesore for many years. By replacing asphalt with a functional and vibrant natural landscape, the project successfully balances environmental stewardship with neighborhood revitalization.
